In an extreme attempt to stand out, the members of the hard rock band Kiss decided to dress up in futuristic suits and paint their faces. By now the world was used to something, in the mid-seventies the pop world was under the spell of glam rock, but Kiss pushed the boundaries of the freak a little further. Without any significant single hit, but with a rock-solid image, the band grew into one of
… the most famous live bands in the world. When the disco-like I Was Made For Loving You finally scored a world hit in 1979, the heyday was already over. Three decades later, there is still a large audience for Kiss concerts. The audience is teeming with lookalikes and there is loud singing along. Kiss still relies mainly on visual spectacle, musically the band hardly rises above the average rock band. Singer Paul Stanley has already lost his voice in the first song. Downright shocking are the views behind the scenes in which the band members explain their music and show in a dry, completely humorless way. Would they have meant it all this time seriously? (MS)more
