Singer Kate Rusby belongs to the absolute top of British folk. For decades she has enchanted the listener with her crystal clear voice with a silky edge. In 2014 she released the album Ghost with her husband and guitarist Damien O'Kane. The photos in the CD booklet create a spooky atmosphere. A dark atmosphere is also noticeable in the ballads, but these are interspersed with more uptempo songs.
The arranged traditionals have a sublime, rich sound: you can hear the flute, accordion, banjo, bouzouki, electric guitar and even strings. Three songs are entirely from Rusby's hand: We Will Sing, After This and Ghost. The first is an uptempo song with a catchy melody, the second is musing and melancholic. In the final track Ghost, the 'Barnsley nightingale' accompanies himself on the piano and sings a moving song about a wandering soul in search of the lost lover. (SvdP)more
