"Tsirkus" is the fourth album by the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band from Toronto. The cover of the CD booklet already mentions that the band has taken a new direction with this album. The Canadian band, founded in 1992 by trumpet player and leader David Buchbinder, consists of: Daniel Barnes (drums), David Buchbinder (trumpet), Andrew Downing (double bass, electric guitar), Lori Freedman (clarinets),
… Marilyn Lerner (piano, Hammond organ) and Dave Wall (vocals and alto saxophone). Dave Wall, who succeeds the Kapelye singer Adrienne Cooper, has a beautiful and flexible voice. His song renditions are very expressive. In their own words, the band initially played some chaotic, playful dance music without finesse. Over the years, the band members have started to reflect on the Yiddish tradition and other styles. "Tsirkus" presents a subtle blend of Yiddish and Balkan music with Beatles-esque psychedelia, pop, soul and jazz. A special album full of original, sometimes crazy sounds and with a lot of freedom of improvisation, played by excellent musicians. (SvdP) _more
