Macedonia is a small country but rich in cultures. Serbs, Turks, Albanians, Greeks and Roma Gypsies have all left their mark on the area. Despite that diversity, Esma Redzepova is loved by all walks of life. The gypsy singer also carries out her national mother role with verve. Not only did she build a radio station for the Roma community in the basement of her house, she also adopted young homeless
… people and gave them music training. Two of those former street bastards have since been promoted to her backing band. With this album Redzepova still proves to be one of the most important singers in the Balkans. The opening track Tu, Me, Duj Dzene immediately hits the spot and forces you to pull the raki out of the closet and swing the bottle across the dance floor. And that while the subject of this song is less festive: the marriage of young daughters. It is characteristic of Redzepova's music. Laughter and hope always follow the praised misery. (PdK)more
