Outside their home country of France, the five gentlemen of L'Attirail are hardly heard. In the Netherlands they are still completely unknown and that is a shame for a group that has been integrating global influences into their music for more than ten years. For the album Kara Deniz, influences from the countries around the Black Sea are involved. Russian waltzes, Turkish melodies and gypsy rhythms
… from Romania and Bulgaria merge smoothly into each other. A list of the instruments used also illustrates the wide spectrum of the band: accordion, guitar, bouzouki, clarinet, duduk, saz and double bass. Listening to Kara Deniz, it seems as if the most diverse music all originated from the same source, and that L'Atterail has just tapped a new fresh stream from that source. A fascinating picture, that despite the lack of a vocalist, remains exciting throughout its duration. (PdK)more
