Cyprus is best known as a holiday island. Few people have heard of the local music. A pity, because the trio Monsieur Doumani proved on their first album how varied the folk music of Cyprus sounded. On this second album, the group chooses to record only three old folk songs. For the rest, this new album consists of own material. The sound of Monsieur Doumani is mainly determined by the tzouras (a
… kind of lute) by Antonis Antoniou. Musically the group looks beyond the music of Cyprus. Influences from folk music from the Balkans, Italy and Scandinavia also permeate the sound of Monsieur Doumani. In the Greek-language texts, the group also addresses serious topics, such as corruption and the financial crisis. Even if you don't understand any of those lyrics, there is still plenty to enjoy on this Monsieur Doumani album. (PdK)more
