Since the end of the 1970s, the electric bass guitar, led by the Catalan Carles Benavent has been making a steady advance within flamenco. Mainly as an addition to the (still) dominant guitar, but this is slowly changing. Juanfe Pérez is a musician from Huelva (southern Spain), trained as a guitarist, but in recent years has focused more and more on the bass guitar. He plays in the group of flamenco
… singer Rosario la Tremendita and produced Ser De Luz (2021) for flutist Sergio de Lope. With Prohibido El Toque, his first solo record, he stretches the limits of the bass as a main instrument even further; many will not even notice that there is no guitar anywhere on the entire album. But Pérez also betrays many other influences with his playing, ranging from the music of Frank Zappa, to The Mars Volta and Latin jazz. With the help of many diverse musicians, he gives each of his compositions a completely unique character. Due in part to the expert production, the record sounds engaging and appealing from beginning to end, whether you're in the mood for a flamenco, jazz or rock record. (JV)more
