Israeli singer Yasmin Levy introduced Ladino music to a wider audience. It is therefore not surprising that in her wake more talented singers focus on this music that sounds like a wonderful mix of Spanish, Jewish and Arabic music. Mor Karbasi, an Israeli singer living in London, sings in Spanish, Hebrew and Ladino. Karbasi is assisted on her debut by her mother Shoshana who wrote all the lyrics,
… and the English composer Joe Taylor who also plays guitar, oud and harmonium. Mor Karbasi has a beautiful voice with an enormous range, but sometimes the album threatens to drown a bit in its ambition. The excess of musical ideas sometimes seems to be at the expense of memorable songs. Karbasi is a singer with potential, who despite her young age - she was twenty when she recorded this album - knows how to put enough experience in her voice. (PdK)more
