Compay Segundo (born 1907) starred on the Buena Vista Social Club's album Buena. His solo album Calle Salud was recorded in early 1999 in studios in Havana, Paris and Malaga. On this album he sings old compositions by Francisco Repilado, Carlos Gardél, Enrique Jorrin and Miguel Matamoros. The dance styles on Calle Salud are son (an old Cuban dance from which salsa originated), bolero, cha cha cha
… and merengue. The music is therefore not much different from that of Buena Vista Social Club. What is striking is the collaboration of Charles Aznavour who sings a translation of Mourir D'Aimer with Compay. (CK)more
