The music of the ney flute mainly accompanies the dancing Dervishes or Sufi priests (Sufi is the mystical branch of Islam). However, you don't have to be a Sufi to enjoy this music. The sound of the ney is deep and soft and therefore very soothing. There are two ways to play ney: the Iranian style, which involves blowing into the opening, and the Turkish style, which involves blowing over the opening.
In addition, there are eight different types of ney, comparable to the clarinet or saxophone. On this CD Kudsi Erguner plays a Mansour ney that has a deeper sound. Kudsi Erguner received the art from his father orally, as prescribed by tradition; a tradition that literally revived Kudsi. In the West too he does a lot to promote Sufi music and tradition. In 1981 he founded the Mevlana study center in Paris. (GO) _more
