Mongolia is a vast country, about 38 times the size of the Netherlands, and less than three million people live there. About 65 percent of the Mongolians lead a nomadic life, traveling in round tents across the endless grass plains and through the Gobi desert with the five jewels as their greatest possession: horses, camels, cattle (yaks), sheep and goats. The music of Mongolia breathes the freedom
… and power of this simple existence, one with nature. Egschiglen means harmony or beautiful melody, and this is the name of an ensemble founded in 1991 to keep Mongolian music alive. The ensemble plays very varied music; in addition to traditional music, also works by contemporary Mongolian composers. Impressive are the overtone singing (producing two tones by voice at the same time) and the throat singing (amazingly deep singing with the larynx), accompanied by horse head violins, dulcimer, bass and percussion. The CD booklet contains extensive background information about Mongolia and its music, singing techniques and musical instruments. A CD full of beautiful music. (SvdP) _more
