Few religions are more prone to false prejudice than voudou. Originally the popular belief of people in West Africa and via the massive slave transports ended up in the Caribbean and South America. Writer Leendert van der Valk sees it as his task to rectify those falsifications. In the book of the same title, he describes how the music used during voodoo rituals found its way into the popular music
… of the New World. Jazz, funk, salsa, afrobeat… all these music styles borrowed the exciting drum rhythms from the voudou and can therefore also be heard on this compilation. According to Van der Valk, voudou has 'the funkiest pantheon of all religions'. The voudou gods love to dance and this CD - a soundtrack to the book - is proof of that. Besides a CD with wonderfully diverse dance music from the Caribbean and West Africa, Voudou is mainly the testament to the survival power of the West African slaves and their descendants. (PdK)more
