Mission and goals

The Stichting Centrale Discotheek Rotterdam (CDR) was founded in 1961 by Rob Maas. The foundation had the principle of broadening taste and musical development. For this purpose, LPs were initially lent, from 1982 CDs and later also music DVDs. Nowadays music is mainly listened to via the internet. Lending is therefore no longer the core task. The CDR increasingly focuses on digital services, such as the website muziekweb.nl. Through that website, but also in other ways, the CDR wants to be a reliable and neutral guide and source of information in the sometimes so confusing and busy music landscape.

The CDR has no commercial objective. Getting acquainted with music and broadening taste is still paramount. The CDR basic principle has therefore never been changed, only the means by which this is sought have changed. The name has been changed. The CDR has transformed from a local 'Rotterdam music library' to the national 'music library of the Netherlands': Muziekweb. We are not a closed archive, but a publicly accessible institution. Independent, reliable and still working from the same mission as in 1961: to broaden the taste and musical development for everyone throughout the Netherlands.
