Due to the enormous range of cabaret on television, it is hardly possible for viewers to keep up with everything. Fortunately, nowadays there are DVDs that give the opportunity to make up for what you missed. For example, the recent shows of Freek de Jonge, the once considered untouchable and later somewhat off his pedestal comedian. The double DVD De Laatste Lach contains two of his most recent
… shows. With the necessary self-mockery, De Jonge finds himself in a nursing home, where the old comedian addresses a man in a coma. De Jonge has long stopped going for a quick laugh, his program is more theater than cabaret. The extra DVD contains the registration of De Dienst Van Freek, a special church service including scripture reading, prayer, collection, drum solo, gospel and sermon, with which the minister's son follows in the footsteps of his father. De Jonge refuses to live on old fame and continues to look for new forms for his art. That still puts him above the bulk of far less talented colleagues who have surpassed him in popularity. (MS)more
