Because French superstar Patricia Kaas enjoys a large fan base in Russia as well as in her own country, her show Kabaret premiered in Moscow in November 2008. Her participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in the Russian capital with the song Et S'Il Fallait Le Faire earned her a worthy eighth place. The studio album Kabaret begins and ends with a spoken monologue with atmospheric background
… music. In the first issue she expresses her admiration for free powerful women like Coco Chanel, Anaïs Nin, Greta Garbo and Marlène Dietrich. The other songs revive the pleasant pre-war cabaret years with the help of a (floating tuned) bar piano, stopped trumpet, accordion, double bass and other instruments. With her dark sultry voice, Marlène Dietrich-like appearance and convincing French-language renditions of covers of Send In The Clowns and Das Glück Kennt Nur Minuten (Hildegard Knef) and new compositions, the album is rock solid. The modern arrangements also make the nostalgic theme very fresh and contemporary. (SvdP)more
