Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu is living proof that there is also such a thing as an 'Australian dream'. The singer was born blind in 1970 in an Aboriginal community in the poor north of Australia. And despite the fact that the Gurrumul never learned Braille, he managed to distinguish himself with his music. He played keyboards and guitar in Yothu Yindi, the Aboriginal rock group that was heard outside
… Australia in the 1990s. Gurrumul's solo debut is of a different caliber. In twelve introspective listening songs Geoffrey accompanies himself on the acoustic guitar. He sings most of the songs in Yonglu, the language he grew up with. The only English-speaking exception is the beautiful I Was Born Blind. Gurrumul's warm voice and intimate guitar playing appealed to many Australians and the album rocketed to the highest echelons of the charts there. The translations in the booklet know how to interpret the meaning of Gurrumul's songs, making them more expressive. (PdK)more
