Renaud Garcia-Fons is one of the few musicians to present the double bass as a solo instrument. This makes the Frenchman a born ambassador of the instrument, and as befits a good ambassador, he travels all over the world. Music from all over the world serves as a source of inspiration for his work. For example, the virtuoso bassist may switch from baroque to Oriental music and again through flamenco
… in one song (even using the double bass as a percussion instrument for a while). In the song Kalimbass, Garcia-Fons even manages to imitate the sound of the West African kalimba by means of two sheets of paper. The CD / DVD was recorded in Marcevol, a monastery church in the southernmost tip of France, acclaimed by Garcia-Fons for its acoustics. In the accompanying DVD, the Frenchman describes this CD as 'a journey into unknown territory'. That's a good description for this album. (PdK)more
