Producer Javier Limón seemed like a nice idea: to bring his favorite singer (Buika) together with his childhood hero, Latin jazz veteran Chucho Valdes. And so Buika was brought to Cuba. That Buika can do something, she proved on her own albums where she concentrated on singing flamenco. Perhaps it is because of her different origins (her parents come from the African country of Equatorial Guinea)
… that she managed to add a special depth to calibrated repertoire. Her slightly hoarse voice also thrives on Valdes' piano parts. The lion's share of the material consists of nightly ballads in which Buika continues to cry about her life and love. The only downside is the ugly cover of this album, but luckily you don't have to look at that while listening. If you are going to listen to one Cuban CD this year, then let it be this one. (PdK)more
