Cameroonian-born singer-songwriter Blick Bassy began singing at the age of 3. With other children from the village, he had to get up at 5 a.m. every morning to rehearse. It paid off: the group managed to win an important award, which enabled Blick Bassy to move to Paris. After several years of performing on small stages, he got a record deal. In 2015, one of his songs was used in an Apple commercial,
… which earned him a huge amount of listeners (unaware or not). Although Blick Bassy sings in his native tongue, his music in particular reflects global pop trends. The dance-based textures and rhythms underlying the biggest hits of the 1920s are also abundant with him. Thanks to his gentle voice and ditto melodies and the fact that he prefers a dreamy atmosphere to a pumping beat, he still manages to put a certain originality into his productions and songs. Mádibá is a particularly pleasant album to listen to. (JV)more
