The great attention from abroad for Zuco 103 ensured that the ears were also opened in our own little country for the extremely talented Dutch trio consisting of the Brazilian singer Lilian Vieira, the German keyboardist Stefan Schmid and the Amsterdam drummer Stefan Kruger alias Stuv. Zuco 103 combines Brazilian bossa nova and samba, funk, jazz, drum & bass and electronic samples into swinging
… dance music. On the album Whaa! this tasty mix is spiced with musical elements from Afro-Cuban, Ethiopian and West African music thanks to excellent guest appearances. In the tracks Love Is Queen Omega and It's A Woman's World, Jamaican reggae / dub pioneer Lee 'Scratch' Perry makes himself heard. Dani Macaco, known from the Spanish world fusion band Macaco, sings a duet with Vieira in Duele Le Le. Interesting contributions are made by bossa nova guitarist Roberto Menescal in Whaa! and the kora player Zoumana Diarra and the Ethiopian singer Minyeshu in Javé. Whaa! is in many ways a very successful album with hip, powerful and organic dance music. (SvdP)more
