The band name Bole2Harlem is a story in itself. Bole is the airport of Addis Abeba, the capital of Ethiopia and the departure point of most Ethiopians when they leave their country. When the trip goes to America, Harlem is the likely place of arrival. There is now a significant Ethiopian community living in this New York neighborhood. The fact that fantastic music was made in Ethiopia in the seventies
… became clear after listening to the many parts of the Ethiopiques CD series. Traces of this 'ethio-funk' can also be heard in the music of Bole2Harlem. In addition, the company drew on the sources of hip-hop. Maki Siraj's raps are mostly in Amharic while the choruses are sung in English. David Schommer is not only a multi-instrumentalist, but also the producer of the band and he provides a full and funky sound. Bole2Harlem brings with Volume 1 a danceable melting pot that makes you long for a warm 'summer in the city'. (PdK)more
