Once, Cesaria Evora said in an interview that she wished her success had come sooner. After all, she was almost fifty years old when she rose to prominence outside Cape Verde. But the question is whether her records would have been just as successful in younger years, because they are mainly carried by Evora's lived voice, with which she brings the mornas - a kind of Cape Verdean blues - to life.
Rogamar ('Pray to the Sea') is her tenth studio album since Evora started her international career in 1988. In addition, a large number of live and compilation albums have been released, because the Cape Verde singer remains incredibly popular. This was also recognized by the music industry in 2003 when she won a Grammy Award for her album Voz d'Amor. The most striking thing about this CD is the duet (Africa Nossa) which she sings with the Senegalese Ismaël Lô. And the string arrangements that give the CD a slick color. But most of all, Cesaria Evora continues to do what she is good at and what she has always done. That will be enough for most people. (MH)more
