The socially critical singer Curtis Mayfield did not seem the most suitable candidate to provide the soundtrack to a blaxploitation film. With Superfly, Mayfield proved otherwise. In fact, Mayfield's philosophical approach provided an extra layer that most such films lack. The character sketch of main character Freddie and the lyrics from the point of view of a devious Pusherman are very strong.
The singer's soul tenor was accompanied by excellent arrangements, wah-wah guitars and throbbing percussion. The title track became one of Mayfield's best-known songs.more
