The combination of the Jamaican-born jazz pianist Monty Alexander with the godfathers of reggae Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare works out very well on the album Monty Meets Sly And Robbie. Not in the least because Monty has a good feeling for the groove of songs as well as a feeling for melody. The choice was made for a mixture of classic soul songs, funky jazz and modern grooves with a hardcore
… dub. Songs like Joe Zawinuls Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, The In Crowd by Ramsey Lewis and Herbie Hancock's Chameleon are featured. On the last track of the album, Hot Milk, a touching tribute to the deceased reggae organist Jackie Mittoo, Monty plays the melodica in a deeply sad way. (RM)more
