After his daring adventures in the avant-garde (the album with John Zorn compositions), the American master guitarist Pat Metheny returns with Kin to a tried and tested sound of eclectic and energetic fusion. He does this with his Unity Group, a band full of knackers such as saxophonist Chris Potter and drummer Antonio Sanchez. But a proportional role is reserved for the keyboard, cello and clarinet
… playing of the relatively unknown Giulio Carmassi. As a democratic unit, the group works its way through a number of dizzying fusion pieces, not forgetting to slow down every now and then. The highlight is the ten-minute title piece: on a motor of raging triplets by Sanchez, the solos alternate, after which the drummer concludes with his own solo. In this band the dexterous Metheny is of course like a fish in water. (MR)more
