There is a good chance that the name Yussef Kamaal cannot be found in the population register of London. The name of this duo project of drummer and keyboardist (aka ) does shine prominently in the catalog of 's -label. And rightly so, because the pair revive the spirit of the 70's jazz funk in a spectacular way. Yussef Kamaal was created as a one-off live session when Williams wanted to present
… his solo material for Boiler Room. The gentlemen liked this so much that they wanted to strengthen their cooperation by performing more. Often armed only with a chord progression they stormed the stage. The rest came naturally. Especially the clear Fender Rhodes playing by and the jazz funk of the label are the foundation of Black Focus. In terms of rhythm, influences from jungle and broken beat as well as traditional funk grooves and blaxploitation are added to this. Yussef Kamaal also plays a lot with atmospheres, which means small intermission music that is spread over the entire CD. In the longer pieces, the possibilities of the compositions are explored in a groovy way. (AD)more
