When asked to describe himself, Jim Lauderdale likes to answer with the simple phrase, "I'm a song." As one of the driving forces behind authentic bluegrass and country, this naturally also fits well with the American. Lauderdale is a total workaholic and has released more than 25 albums since his debut Planet Of Love (1991). On I'm A Song (2014) the singer / songwriter proves that quantity does
… not have to be an obstacle to quality. Lauderdale seems to get inspiration from everywhere and holds the attention for twenty songs (together more than an hour). There is no cover on this disc, although the bard did get the help of Bobby Bare, Elvis Costello and Robert Hunter while writing. Big names that all guarantee good music. Of course, the rootsy songs can largely be drawn without listening to them: acoustic guitars, a howling pedal steel, here and there a honky tonk piano. But although the recipe of Lauderdale's music almost always remains the same, I'm A Song is very inspired. (JE)more
