He likes to call himself the cosmic cowboy, but Garrett T. Caps sounds especially free-spirited and earthy on his album-long ode to the Texas town of San Antonio. Free-spirited like his late fellow townsman
Doug Sahm, with an energetic mix of country rock, honky tonk and tex-mex. He's also got a honky tonk version of the prog song Locomotive Breath (
Jethro Tull) and the festive Spanish song Margarita,
… Margarita by Santiago Jimenez, with flamboyant accordion playing by his son Santiago Jimenez Jr. (the brother of Flaco). Especially in the Americana-loving Netherlands, Capps is gaining ground with every album and he fills venues like the Amsterdam Paradiso and the Groningen Oosterpoort. He appropriately ends this album with a song by his great example Doug Sahm, called Goodbye San Antone, Hello Amsterdam. After a passionate tribute to his hometown, Capps is ready to take on the world. (MR)more
