Her voice immediately takes you back to the eighties, the decade in which singer and fashion model Sade was successful with hits such as When Am I Going To Make A Living, Smooth Operator, The Sweetest Taboo and Love Is Stronger Than Pride. The music and songs on her first CD in eight years don't. They lack the magic and the jazzy, 'sophisticated' sound that made her songs so special at the time.
Lovers Rock contains eleven modest ballads, with gently present r & b, trip hop and reggae influences. The record starts off somewhat sleepy, but luckily that is made up for with a much more inspired sounding second half. She keeps the best for last with songs like Slave Song, The Sweetest Gift and Immigrant. (WvdZ)more
