Trip hop was an extremely trendy genre in the mid-1990s. Tricky's 1995 album Maxinquaye is still considered a highlight in the genre. Since then the craze has waned and the Englishman made increasingly strange-sounding records. It gave him the image of a rebellious and eccentric artist. At Blowback, Tricky has definitely passed the trip hop. It is an accessible album, featuring a multitude of styles:
hip-hop, funk, dub-reggae and even grunge (the daring Nirvana cover Something In The Way). The collaboration of celebrities such as Alanis Morrisette, Anthony Kiedis (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Cyndi Lauper and Ed Kowalczyk (Live) has undoubtedly ensured that a clear song structure can now be recognized in the complex production of Tricky. If there is still such a thing as a contemporary modern pop sound, Tricky comes very close to it with Blowback. (MS)more
