Amanda Marshall is a female singer / songwriter from Canada. She scored two hits in the Netherlands in 1996 with Beautiful Goodbye and Let It Rain, both from her self-titled debut CD. The follow-up Tuesday's Child (1999) was somewhat disappointing, but with Everybody's Got A Story she takes a convincing revenge. It is a CD with a lot of speed. One strong song after another pops out of the speakers
… and before you know it you'll be at the end. The opening track Everybodys Got A Story is one of the best (female) rock songs of recent years. The album was produced by old hand Peter Asher (ex-Peter & Gordon), who already in the seventies and eighties was a successful producer for Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor and Randy Newman. He has nevertheless turned it into a modern sounding album, for which Marshall wrote all the songs himself. Amanda Marshall's music rocks just as hard as Melissa Etheridge's, while her lyrics are similar to those of her compatriot Alanis Morisette. This means that she sings quite explicitly about her relationships with (different) men. Beautiful examples of this are Love Is My Witness, Colleen (I Saw Him First) and Brand New Beau, with the desperate phrase I Thought I Was Your Queen. It is a relief to listen to this adult lady among the increasingly younger R&B singers. Hopefully, Amanda Marshall can tell us many more of these stories in the coming years.
