When it comes to rap music trends, one usually speaks of 'westcoast' (Los Angeles) and 'eastcoast' (New York and Washington). It was not until 1990 that it became apparent that there were also good rappers living in the black southern United States. The self-titled album by Geto Boys from Houston, Texas became a huge sales success. Suddenly, the record executives from New York and Los Angeles
… understood that there was money to be made in the South. The famous rap label Def Jam even set up a special department for it: Def Jam South. The president of this sub-label became ex-Geto Boy Scarface (real name: Brad Jordan). Although he is hardly known in the Netherlands in 2002, he was in America from his debut Mr. Scarface Is Back (1991) a superstar. Greats like Ice Cube, 2Pac, Master P. and Dr. Dre lined up to work with him. His seventh CD The Fix is a very strong album with good raps, inventive samples and guest appearances from colleagues such as The Neptunes, Nas, Faith Evans, Kelly Price and Jay-Z. My favorite track is On My Block, with a genius piano sample from Be Real Black For Me (Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway). Festive picture! (MvP)more
