Singer / guitarist Chris Rea scored his first hit in 1978 with Fool (If You Think It's Over) and in the years that followed managed to profile himself with a recognizable melancholic style. His bluesy, laidback music was never spectacular, but always had enough quality to bind him to a loyal fan base. (1989) is considered his best record, and successful singles like Josephine, On The Beach and
… especially the Christmas song Driving Home For Christmas assured him of a carefree old age. After a fairly serious illness, in which he had to stay in bed for some time, Rea started to itch again for a new record. The blues is more central than ever on Stony Road, in addition to his love for gospel. Chris Rea lets his guitar cry as usual and his hoarse voice proves to be a special instrument again. Not very startling? I agree, but for those who are sensitive to it, that special melancholic atmosphere is still addictive. (MS)more
