Without much fanfare, Matchbox Twenty slowly grew into one of America's best-selling rock groups. The band's artisanal mix of grunge, hard rock and alternative rock fits perfectly with the average taste of the American consumer. After the duet of singer Rob Thomas with Santana (Smooth, 1999) became a huge hit, the attention for his group only increased, so that the counter for their first album
… Yourself Or Someone Like You has already risen well over ten million copies. , without the album ever reaching the top of the charts. Success continued with the follow-up Mad Season (2000). On this third album it looks like the fame is starting to take its toll. It sounds like a typical piece of work from a band that has been touring intensively for years. The ensemble playing is closer than ever, but the time and tranquility needed to write good songs has been lost somewhat, with the occasional exception like Hand Me Down. Although this album impresses with its 'power', it doesn't really last. (MS)more
