With the first notes of Damnation And A Day you know one thing for sure: this is not a nice CD. Thunder and a string quartet in a minor key set the menacing tone for the next chapter in the successful horror story called Cradle Of Filth. The English black metal band has been on the road for years and has achieved unprecedented popularity. So popular, in fact, that major label Sony saw a living in
… the formation around singer Dani Filth and signed the band. Fortunately, nothing came of the style break (or a calmer Cradle Of Filth) that was feared by many fans, because Cradle Of Filth has changed little or nothing in its sound and simply plays the black metal that made it big. Usually this is lightning fast and very hard, but also with enough space for slightly melodic organ, choir and stab arrangements. In that sense Damnation And A Day may not offer anything new, but it is in any case just another very strong album. (RWK)more
