The Brussels-born singer Natacha Atlas has always pushed the boundaries of the fusion between her North African background and Western electronic dance music. She was a singer with the techno-pop band Transglobal Underground and she often collaborated with Jah Wobble. Of her solo CDs, especially Gedida from 1999 and Ayeshteni from 2001 were well received. … one hand, Natacha Atlas tries to stay hopelessly modern by collaborating with rapper Princess Julianna and providing her music with the necessary hip-hop beats. This does not always work well and often feels forced, because her strength lies more in the ambient trip-hop style, which offers much more space so that her crystal-clear voice comes out best. The guest appearances of Sinead O'Connor (Simple Heart) and Jah Wobble (This Realm) are among the highlights of this CD, which is at least half filled with songs that are more than worth it. (AD)more
