In 1980, Fetisch, founder of Terranova, first heard the heavy beats that were the staple of American hip-hop. He then moved directly to New York and started a successful career as a DJ, which resulted in a flourishing friendship with the Stereo Mc's. Once back in Berlin, he started Terranova (first called Turntable Terranova) with pianist Marco Meister and graffiti artist Kaos. The comparisons with
… Kruder & Dorfmeister were real. In the meantime these are no longer valid, because their music has moved into the darkness a lot more. Besides trip hop, Terranova nowadays also makes breakbeat (Kiss) and dark, militant electro, like only a German can (Get It On). Even the use of ripping guitars is not shunned (Rockmongril). With that Peace Is Tough has not really become a balanced album, but one that brings a lot of darkness into the light. (AD)more
