Operating since 1980, Swiss duo Yello has influenced many techno artists with their mix of electronics, exotica and theatrical elements. Millionaire, professional gambler and member of Switzerland's national golf team Dieter Meier is responsible for the concept and the vocals, while composer / arranger Boris Blank provides the music. The Eye (2003) shows that this illustrious pair has kept up with
… the times. Meier's predilection for mambo and soundtracks can still be optimally combined with Blank's modest technical production, with the occasional help of techno producers such as Hakan Lidbo, Ian Pooley and Akufen. Although the vocals of guest singer Jade Davies sound a bit too dreamy at times, she still forms a good counterweight to Meier's flamboyant voice. Towards the end, The Eye increasingly sounds like a soundtrack for a film to be made, where you can make up the images yourself. The Eye is not the masterpiece that Stella was, but it proves that most techno producers can still learn a lot from Yello. (AD)more
