British singer Gabriëlle scored her biggest hit in 1993 with Dreams (Can Come True). Her later work was invariably made according to the same formula (a flawlessly produced mix of pop and R&B). She scored a few more hits, but she never became a really big name. Her fourth album offers more of the same. The album contains eleven sensitive, similar songs with love as the subject. Unfortunately
… they are all performed in the same (mid) tempo, so there is little dynamism in the album. A swinging dance number or a carried ballad is sorely missed. Gabriëlle will not reach a new fan base with Play To Win, but her loyal fans can lovingly embrace the trusted Gabriëlle again four years after predecessor Rise (2000). (MS)more
