LPG comes all the way from Hoogezand (Groningen). At the time of the release of this debut, the men have an average age of 22 years. Yet this album can be described as a so-called 'adult' record. I Fear No Foe is therefore released on the authoritative label Excelsior (Johan, Spinvis, Solo) for a reason. The music is quite original and has influences from the Beach Boys (through the polyphonic
… vocals), Pavement and also The Shins. The album, recorded by Excelsior producer Frans Hagenaars, is wonderfully lo-fi and ramshackle, which gives the record a certain charm. LPG's songs have an international appearance and are not inferior to those of their foreign examples. Singer Arend Jan van der Scheer has a fragile voice with a sob, as you can immediately hear in opener Speech. Other highlights include Belly Rollercoaster, Consume Me Free, and the Beach Boys-esque song Brag. A great debut by a very inventive band. (JdD)more
