Like Tom Waits or Mark Lanegan, Stuart A. Staples has a raspy voice that is recognizable out of thousands. He sings in a whisper and it seems as if every song has the desolation of an abandoned pub. Staples started Tindersticks in 1992 and immediately hit the mark with their self-titled debut album. Lucky Dog Recordings 03-04 is Staples' first solo record. The plate consists of material that has
… not been used for Tindersticks. It goes without saying that, especially due to the characteristic voice of Stuart A. Staples, the record is not very far from what Tindersticks does. Staples does it by the way with a number of guest musicians, such as Gina Foster (who sings a song written for her) and Yann Tiersen on piano. This album is a must for real Tindersticks fans, since it has the same ominous atmosphere as the work of the band itself. (JdD)more
