After Bettie Serveert and Johan there is another English-language guitar group with De Staat that opts for a Dutch band name. Perhaps to evoke some exoticism abroad? Because if we can believe the critics on this album, we are dealing here with the first international hit of 2009. De Staat is the toy of the Nijmegen singer / guitarist Torre Florim. He wrote, produced and recorded all instruments
… himself on this debut album. Then he gathered a regular band around him with which he performs a lot. De Staat has an angular sound due to Florim's racy guitar playing and staccato vocals. One time they tend to stoner rock and the next time to the Belgian rock of a group like Millionaire. The disadvantage is that Florim sometimes tries to force his voice to sound cool. Uncalled for, because Torre proves with Wait For Evolution that he is perfectly capable of writing at least a handful of great rock songs. (PdK)more
