The band Matchbox 20 never reached the mega status in the Netherlands that it managed to achieve in its home country the United States. There, tens of millions of copies of the albums were sold. Even when frontman Rob Thomas went on a solo tour, this was not accompanied by high album rankings in our country. Nevertheless, he managed to infiltrate Dutch living rooms in a roundabout way: as a guest
… singer on the highly successful Santana album Supernatural (1999). On Thomas' second solo album, we hear the familiar radio-friendly mix of rock and blue eyed soul, sung with the kind of rock voice once made the norm by Eddie Vedder. There is no further unconventional note, everywhere is nicely colored within the lines. Although the singer says he sings about personal things, his songs just do not want to strike a nerve. A relative highlight is the frivolous love song Hard On You, which interrupts the endless stream of soulless FM rock for a while. (MS)more
