Even though they come to save your soul, the Soulsavers themselves suffer from a broken heart. That much is clear after the last note on Broken fades. After the atmospheric piano intro The Seventh Proof, the band descends with Unbalanced Pieces and the aptly titled Death Bells into the darkest regions of their soul. On their latest album It's Not How Far You Fall, It's The Way You Land (2007), the
… band already appealed to the smoked vocals of Mark Lanegan and now his voice hits you like an old friend. Where Lanegan seemed mainly a guest singer at the time, the English producer duo wrote the songs on this album on the tattooed body of the singing giant. At Lanegan's hand, the Soulsavers dive deep into ancient American styles such as gospel and country. The winter atmosphere on this album seems to indicate, that after all his solo albums full of drink and tears, Lanegan has not yet received a cheerful boost from life. Broken is therefore heavy on the stomach and seems to be a redemption for all listeners who prefer to hear their music as darkly as possible. (PdK)more
