Grand and compelling, that's how Scott Matthews' music sounds. With a powerful high voice that unmistakably reminds of Jeff Buckley, he immediately caught the eye with his debut album Passing Stranger (2006). Support acts for Rufus Wainwright, Bert Jansch, Foo Fighters and Robert Plant and Alison Krauss followed. During the latter tour, contact arose with Robert Plant, who turned out to be a passionate
… advocate for his protégé and sings along on this record. Not that Matthews would need the help of famous friends, he is perfectly capable of impressing on his own. Elsewhere is an ambitious and dynamic piece, on which muscular bombast is alternated with modest pieces. Matthews can play impressively on the high notes and sing nicely small in the low regions. The result therefore requires some concentration from the listener, but whoever can muster that is rewarded with a record that seems to want to explore all regions of human emotion. (MS)more
