Even before your new album comes out platinum, it is still possible. Jan Smits Leef was sold more than fifty thousand times a few days before the release. Smit was full when he was confronted with this fact. According to the Volendammer, it was a turbulent year, referring to his private life. The lyrics on Leef are all written by the singer himself and show that Smit tackles his problems with positive
… energy. Although Jan Smit is often blamed for an incorruptible and smooth image, his lyrics radiate enough personality. Smit has some nice puns in store ('In' t Frans or Duijts'), shows his nostalgic side and has again written a few songs about drinking (too much) beer. The single Leef Nu Het Kan, for which Smit also wrote the music, resembles the best of Boudewijn de Groot. Actually all songs on this CD are of such a high level. Smit sometimes swallows a syllable and sometimes rhymes childlike, but the singer emerges here as the interpreter of the cheerful and uptempo song of life. (JE)more
