The fresh beat sound of the sixties remains a source of inspiration for British bands. Unfortunately, the urge for innovation of the same generation is not. When this record comes out, The Coral has been varying for another eight years on the sound that The Beatles had been looking forward to within half a year in 1966. The sound of Rubber Soul to be precise, with the occasional hint of The Byrds
… and The Hollies. In England, this gave the band a solid place in the sub-top of Britpop. So far a breakthrough has not been achieved in the Netherlands. Butterfly House is a new proof of the competence of this group of artisan musicians. Both the sound and the songs are still mostly reminiscent of The Beatles, where even the famous opening chord of A Hard Day's Night is not safe (North Parade). A little less respect for the past would have been welcome. (MS)more
