As if we weren't confused enough by Crystal Antlers, Crystal Castles or Crystal Stilts, we now welcome Crystal Fighters. This new band from England and the Basque Country causes divided opinions in the beginning of 2011. Some listeners hear MGMT, Yeasayer or even MIA resound in this band, others react bewildered to the pressure with little content. The truth, as the cliché wants it, lies in the
… middle. The Spanish influences (don't let the Basques hear it!) Give the mix of electronica and rock something original, while the other musical qualities are not particularly pleasing to the ear. A handful of songs have hit potential and even a high sing-along content, with At Home as a big highlight. A nice acoustic strum, pounding beat and a beautiful lady voice. Nothing we haven't heard before but it sounds damn fine. One song later we are treated to repetitive trance synths and no melody is recognizable. Crystal Fighters is at home in all markets and has a real alternative pop record in 2011 with Star Of Love. (JE)more
