Phil Spector will always be known for his Wall of Sound. His choice to provide pop songs with a massive wall of sound continues to inspire artists and producers in the 21st century. The American rose to fame in the early 1960s as a producer of women's groups such as The Crystals, Bobb B. Soxx And The Blue Jeans and The Ronettes. The six albums he recorded with them for his label Philles have now
… been re-released in a luxury box, most of them on CD for the first time. This is not surprising, because albums were never preferred by Spector, who he once described as 'two hits and then ten pieces of garbage'. That may be a bit of an exaggeration, this box contains quite a bit of excess fat. For example, what do we do with three identical versions of Uptown and On Broadway spread over three discs? Good, the release offers a nice bonus disc with b-sides and looks pristine, but otherwise it is no more than a slightly more chic and especially much more expensive Greatest Hits of Spector's first work. Despite the beautiful Wall of Sound. (JE)more
