Over the years, Eleni Mandell has started making more and more 'normal' music. While some traces of an experimental past could still be heard on her previous record, on Let's Fly A Kite that past has been completely erased. The album starts with a nice sixties-ish song, with a leading role for the inevitable Philicorda organ. What follows is a series of great songs with a pinch of country and a
… moody trumpet from time to time. There is no question that Mandell can write. Even a simple song like I Like You is, in all its simplicity, a song that cannot be written by just anyone. It is commendable to Mandell that she dares to choose: no record from her rich oeuvre sounds the same. The choice for Let's Fly A Kite fell on the well-trodden path of moderate acoustic guitars, soft drums and in-line vocals. The choice for safety is understandable, as she has already been looking for adventure, but for the listener it is hoped that Eleni Mandell will return to her steps and will once again color outside the lines.
